Happy Autumn!

There's a nip in the air that undeniably signals fall. I felt it even under the sunny skies of Nashville this weekend. While I work on downloading pics from the Southern Artisan Cheese Festival and my amazing dinner at The Catbird Seat, here is some of the autumnal abundance at the Nashville Farmers Market Saturday morning. Can you help me identify any of these varieties? I'm sure I could have asked the farmers staffing the booths. But I became too transfixed to ask . . .

We stopped at a farm market on Saturday that had a whole bunch of weird pumpkins. Not as many varieties as you saw, but quite a few. The ones that look like they have barnacles on them (picture 3) is a first for me. The stand we stopped at had some, but the pumpkins weren't nearly as covered as the ones in your picture.

The turban pumpkins (picture 7) are also neat to look at. I've seen them before. The Pudge ended up buying a really nice "standard" pumpkin that he wants to carve. He already did one last week that we had to toss. I have a feeling we're going to go thru a lot of pumpkins this year.

Buzzy, good to hear from you! I've learned the ones covered with "barnacles" are called "peanut pumpkins" and are great for soups.

October may be a long month if The Pudge decides to get creative, but good on him. Your comment about tossing pumpkins made me think of our local "Pumpkin Chuck." I bet your Scout troup would have a blast with a trebuchet. But, as usual, most of the work building it would be up to you :)

Love the photos--definitely great for getting in the fall mood. We had our first frost here, pretty much put paid to the garden. I'm going to be catching up on your blog. You have been one busy woman this summer!!

Cheers,
GG

Thanks, GG! After all the traveling I've been doing, I need to get caught up on my own darn blog :) Working on getting something up about Nashville before I head to Columbus this weekend for the book launch party for my most recent editing project! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Slow-Food-Cincinnati/214789577151?fref=ts

P.S. Your aspen photos have made me miss my CO mountains - thanks for sharing!

i LOVE all the varieties of pumpkins/squash you've shown. i haven't even gotten one yet, this inspires me to try and find some more unusual ones to display and, of course, prepare;)
